Traditional outdoor advertising (billboards) done right and for the right reasons, can be very effective. Your message is prominently displayed in a particular location 24 hours a day. People driving by every day are exposed to the message repeatedly. The main downside is that an outdoor campaign on a large city-wide scale can be quite expensive. Realize that placement is a big factor here. The traffic counts on a major urban freeway are much higher than on a two-lane road on the outskirts of town. Naturally, the higher the traffic counts, the more expensive the billboard. Outdoor is perhaps the most useful medium for directing traffic to a location, i.e., “Burger King, next exit, turn right.” Something else to keep in mind is that the average person driving by a billboard cannot read more than seven words at a glance, so the message needs to be simple and straightforward. Outdoor can also play an important role in reinforcing other marketing efforts, like a radio or TV schedule. If you decide to use outdoor, you need to figure in plenty of lead time to make sure that the locations you want are available, and also keep in mind that there will be extra charges for the graphics and fabrication.
